Prostate Health Supplements

An enlarged prostate (BPH) affects roughly 50% of men in their 50s and up to 80–90% by age 70. The compounds below are the most-researched non-drug options for urinary symptoms.

New urinary symptoms — weak stream, frequent urination, waking to urinate — can also come from prostatitis, prostate cancer, or bladder problems. Rule those out before starting any supplement protocol.

Check for interactions before you stack

Saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol and pygeum overlap with 5-AR inhibitors, blood thinners and PSA-affecting drugs. Run your combo through the checker before adding a new compound.

FAQ

What's the difference between BPH and prostatitis?

BPH is age-related enlargement of the prostate causing urinary symptoms. Prostatitis is inflammation, often from infection, and needs different treatment. Only a doctor can tell them apart.

Does saw palmetto really work?

The largest trials (STEP) found no benefit over placebo at the standard 320 mg dose. Smaller trials of the Permixon-brand extract show more consistent symptom improvement. Response is highly product-specific.

Can supplements shrink the prostate?

Not the way finasteride does. Supplements can improve urinary symptoms without measurably shrinking the gland.

Will these affect my PSA test?

Saw palmetto and finasteride-like compounds can lower PSA readings. Always tell your doctor what you take before a PSA test.

Can I stack saw palmetto with pygeum and beta-sitosterol?

Yes — they hit different pathways (5-alpha-reductase, inflammation, sterol metabolism). Combined protocols are common; keep each at the standard dose rather than doubling any one. Run the pair through DoseRoutine's interaction checker before adding a fourth.

Are prostate supplements safe with tamsulosin or finasteride?

Tamsulosin (Flomax) is usually fine to combine with saw palmetto or beta-sitosterol, but watch for dizziness. Finasteride already blocks 5-alpha-reductase — adding saw palmetto is redundant and may confuse a rising PSA. Tell your urologist about every supplement.

How long before I know if a prostate stack is working?

Give it 8–12 weeks and track your IPSS score, nocturia count, and urinary flow. If nothing has moved by 12 weeks at a standard dose, the compound is not your responder — swap, don't stack more.
