Where alpha-GPC sits among choline sources
Choline reaches the body from food — eggs, liver, soy, dairy, cruciferous vegetables — and from supplements including choline bitartrate, citicoline (CDP-choline) and alpha-GPC. They are not equivalent.
Choline bitartrate is cheap but crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly. Alpha-GPC and citicoline both cross more readily, which is why nootropic products favour them despite the higher cost.

What the cognitive research actually studied

Side effects and the TMAO question
Reported effects at supplement doses include headache, nausea, dizziness, heartburn and insomnia. Excessive choline intake produces a characteristic fishy body odour, along with sweating and low blood pressure, which is part of why the upper limit exists.
A separate and more interesting question concerns TMAO. Gut bacteria convert dietary choline into trimethylamine, which the liver oxidises to TMAO, a metabolite associated in observational research with cardiovascular risk.
A 2021 stroke research report raised concern about alpha-GPC specifically. This is an association-level signal rather than an established causal risk, and it is a reason for people with cardiovascular disease to raise alpha-GPC with their doctor rather than assume it is inert.
Practical framing
