Selenium Dosage: How Much Selenium Per Day Is Safe?
Selenium has one of the narrowest gaps in nutrition between the amount you need and the amount that causes harm. The requirement is 55 micrograms a day; the ceiling is 400. A handful of brazil nuts can cross most of that distance.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the recommended dietary allowance for adults at 55 micrograms a day, rising to 60 micrograms in pregnancy and 70 micrograms while breastfeeding. The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 400 micrograms a day from all sources. The large SELECT randomised trial tested 200 micrograms a day of L-selenomethionine and found no reduction in prostate cancer risk. The gap between requirement and ceiling is small
Most nutrients have a wide margin between the daily requirement and the upper limit. Selenium does not: 55 micrograms against 400 micrograms is roughly sevenfold, and a typical supplement supplies 100–200 micrograms on its own. Add a multivitamin, a brazil nut habit and a fortified product, and the total climbs faster than people expect.
That is the single most useful thing to know about selenium dosing. The question is rarely 'am I getting enough' — in most of North America and much of Europe, ordinary diets supply plenty because the soil is selenium-rich — but 'am I stacking several sources without counting'.

What SELECT tested, and what it found
The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) randomised more than 35,000 men to selenium 200 micrograms a day as L-selenomethionine, vitamin E 400 IU a day, both, or placebo. It was designed to test whether these supplements prevent prostate cancer.
The 2009 JAMA report found no reduction in prostate cancer risk from selenium, from vitamin E, or from the combination. Later follow-up reported an increased prostate cancer risk in the vitamin E arm, and the trial was stopped early for futility.
SELECT is the reason the confident 'selenium prevents cancer' claims of the early 2000s are no longer credible. It also demonstrates something useful about dosing: 200 micrograms a day was tolerated in a very large population, but tolerability is not benefit.
Selenosis: what too much actually looks like
Chronic excess selenium produces a recognisable syndrome. The NIH ODS describes garlic-smelling breath, a metallic taste, hair loss, brittle or shedding nails, skin lesions, nausea, diarrhea, irritability and, in severe cases, neurological problems.
Real-world poisonings have come from manufacturing errors in liquid supplements containing far more selenium than the label stated, and from very high brazil nut intake. Both illustrate the same point: selenium harm comes from sustained excess, not from a single large meal.
Some observational research has also linked higher selenium status to increased type 2 diabetes risk, which the ODS notes as an area of concern rather than settled causation. That is another argument against taking a supplement 'just in case' when your diet already supplies enough.
Thyroid, immunity and the areas still being studied
Selenium is a genuine requirement for thyroid hormone metabolism: the deiodinase enzymes that convert T4 to active T3 are selenoproteins, and the thyroid holds a high concentration of selenium per gram of tissue. That biology has driven trials of selenium in autoimmune thyroid disease, some of which report reductions in thyroid peroxidase antibodies.
Whether that biomarker change translates into better clinical outcomes is not established, and guidelines do not uniformly recommend selenium in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. If you have a thyroid condition, this is a discussion with your endocrinologist rather than a self-managed supplement decision.
Selenium's role in immune function and in glutathione peroxidase antioxidant defence is well described biochemically. Supplementing above requirement in people who are already replete has not been shown to add benefit.
Forms, food and who is likely to be low
Selenomethionine, the organic form found in food and used in SELECT, is absorbed efficiently and incorporated into body proteins. Sodium selenite and sodium selenate are inorganic forms used in some supplements and in clinical nutrition. The ODS notes that absorption of selenium from food and supplements is generally high.
Brazil nuts, seafood, organ meats, eggs, poultry and grains grown in selenium-rich soil are the main food sources. Because plant content tracks soil selenium, intake varies geographically — parts of China and some European regions have low-selenium soil, while North American wheat is relatively high.
Deficiency concentrates in people on long-term parenteral nutrition without selenium, people with severe gastrointestinal disorders, and populations in low-selenium regions. Keshan disease, a cardiomyopathy associated with severe selenium deficiency, is the classic example.
