Gabapentin, commonly known by its brand name Neurontin among others, is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to treat partial seizures and neuropathic pain. It was originally approved in 1993 by the FDA as an add-on therapy for partial seizures in adults. Since then, its use has expanded to include postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles) and restless legs syndrome. Although it shares a structural similarity with the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), its mechanism of action does not directly involve GABA receptors.
