Overview

Omeprazole is a medication classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It is widely used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Conditions treated with omeprazole include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It can also be used to treat erosion of the esophagus caused by stomach acid. Omeprazole is available as both an over-the-counter and prescription medication, typically in capsule or tablet form. Originally approved by the FDA in 1989, it is listed on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines (DrugBank, FDA label).
