Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. It is naturally produced in the liver and is present in virtually all cells of the body. Often referred to as the 'master antioxidant,' glutathione plays a critical role in protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Beyond its antioxidant function, it is also involved in various metabolic processes, including detoxification, immune system modulation, and DNA repair. The body's ability to produce glutathione can be influenced by diet, environmental toxins, stress, and aging. Levels can also be depleted by certain health conditions and medications. While the body produces glutathione endogenously, it can also be obtained through diet or supplementation. However, the bioavailability of orally ingested glutathione can be limited due to enzymatic breakdown in the digestive tract, a factor that has led to research into different forms of supplementation.
